Brisbane Technical Writers
Meetings - 2008
Report on QLD group meeting of 6 September 2008
The September meeting of Queensland technical writers was a special one – we welcomed our first speaker since the inception of the group.
Dave Halls from TechWriter Placements and Services flew up from Sydney to deliver a short presentation on the current trends in the Technical Writing industry. The presentation was held in the Training Rooms of Intec Billing, and covered a number of relevant topics:
- Growth industries in Queensland.
- How to handle the different people who recruit technical writers.
- The skill sets that will be highly regarded in the future.
- What not to do when liaising with recruitment agencies.
- Career paths for technical writers.
Dave also generously sponsored the food for the September meeting. This time we held the socialising component at Zen Bar on Post Office Square.
The attendance figures were the best of any gathering to date, with the lowest last minute dropout count. I think the group really appreciated Dave's presentation, and having a focal point for the evening helped keep attendance levels high.

We are also looking for sponsors who could spare about $100 to sponsor our food for the next meeting. Your company gets mentioned in the ASTC (NSW) newsletter, the ASTC (NSW) website and on all the meeting requests we send out.
Report on QLD group meeting of 6 May 2008
The attendance figures for the Brisbane Technical Writers meetings are continuing to grow. We are pleased to say that
our 7 May gathering, held at Bubbles CBD, had many new faces.
A strong presence from
RedHat (who kindly sponsored the food), as well as representatives from Virgin Blue and Australian Aerospace made for lively discussions.
The meetings provide an excellent forum to hear how other organisations manage documentation, swap ideas about documentation issues, and chat about other non-technical writing matters.
The Brisbane get-togethers are really starting to gather momentum. It's great to see strong support from the Brisbane Technical Writer community. Please continue to support the meetings.
